Listening to EarthGang is like being transported to a cosmic utopia where black excellence and cultural pride reign supreme. Originally high school homies in southwest ATL, Olu aka Johnny Venus and WowGr8 aka Doctur Dot are a brotherhood, a pair of pals who attended HBCU Hampton University together, and returned home with insatiable music dreams. Playin’ the underground venue circuit and droppin’ mixtapes under the name Spillage Village, their creative sounds attracted locals like J.I.D., 6LACK and Young Thug. After multiple mixtapes made the rounds, J. Cole signed them, giving their progressive artistry a proper home at Dreamville. Considering their eccentricities and deep well of musical inspirations, the media started comparing them to OutKast. But everything from Quincy’s cool to Kendrick’s consciousness comes through in an Earthgang track. When we chose them to be part of our DSCVR: Artists To Watch program back in 2017, we knew they would continue to dazzle us. They hit the box to perform “Blue Moon” and “Trippin” from last year’s ‘Mirrorland,’ their very impressive debut disc. It all turned out to be the most funkadelic day we’ve had down at Ctrl central.
