On July 31, at the National Black Journalists convention, former President Donald Trump made a controversial statement regarding Vice President Kamala Harris’s heritage. Speaking to an audience of about 1,000 attendees, Trump falsely claimed that Harris had previously downplayed her Black heritage, saying, “She was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was Black, until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black.”
Trump’s remarks were met with a mix of disbelief and jeers from the audience, highlighting the tension between his statements and the views of many within the Black journalism community. The incident underscores the ongoing debates about identity and representation in American politics and media.
